Welcome to Ketchikan, Alaska!

Alaska is a land of exceptional wilderness, stunning scenery, impressive wildlife and some of the best fishing in the world. So, there are few things more uniquely Alaskan than spending a day on the water reeling in salmon. And the best salmon fishing in Alaska is found in Ketchikan. It’s for this reason that we’re the Salmon Capital of the World! For visitors, fishing charters in Ketchikan are a unique way to experience a truly Alaskan adventure.

A Ketchikan Fishing Adventure

Ketchikan started as an Alaskan Native seasonal fishing camp and still thrives on the history, tradition and culture of salmon fishing. Because of this, fishing charters in Ketchikan are a glimpse into our way of life and culture, for our visitors.

There are many reasons to choose Ketchikan for your fishing adventure.

We fish in pristine, protected waters, not open ocean. You’ll depart right from downtown where the hotels and cruise ships are located. And the best fishing grounds are a short 20-30 minutes away.

When you go, you’ll want a guide that knows this town and these waters, someone who’s spent their life fishing. And you’ll want a trip tailored to you.

I’m Captain Nick and I think you should go fishing, not get taken fishing! So, when choosing a fishing charter in Ketchikan, you should choose Chasin’ Tail Charters!

Fishing Charters in Ketchikan with Chasin’ Tail

So why is Chasin’ Tail your best option for fishing charters in Ketchikan?

This is your trip, your way.

Charters are personalized for you, your wants, schedule, and experience.

A personal experience with me, Captain Nick, Owner-Operator.

You plan with me, book with me, get picked up by me and fish with me.

Ketchikan local.

I’m a 3rd generation fisherman, born and raised in Ketchikan for the past 51 years. I’ve captained over 2,000 charters and have spent thousands of hours on these waters.

Licensed and safety certified Captain.

I have a US Coast Guard 100 Ton Master License. I’m a Marine Safety Drill Instructor and First Aid and CPR Certified.

The C/V Chasin’ Tail is modern, safe and comfortable.

There’s an onboard private bathroom, plenty of deck space for fishing, an enclosed cabin, all USCG required safety equipment, plus plenty of modern technology to make fishing more productive and comfortable.

I offer family friendly charters.

Kids are a welcome addition to any of my fishing charters in Ketchikan. I even have a Kids Corner page with more information for our littlest anglers.

Don’t leave your catch in Alaska.

Don’t worry about being accused of tall tales when you get home. For an additional fee your catch can be processed, smoked (if desired), packaged and shipped straight to your door. And if you don’t know how to cook it, I can help. Visit my Recipes page.

Extremely Happy Guests.

I have many happy guests every year. Because of this, I also have many guests that come back to fish with me year after year.

What my guests are saying…

  • Nick did an absolutely amazing job. He ran the 4 of us all over the waters to help us fill our limits. He did it himself without a deck hand and worked his butt off We had a great time.

He educated us a ton about the tides, fish and more. Very patient with helping 4 of us on polesand was great to conversate with. We ended up with a great haul. Hitting our Full limit on pinks, caught some Coho and chum. Caught a cool rockfish but we couldn't keep it. But made a great photo. We would absolutely recommend him

  • Highly Recommend! We fished with CAPT Nick on a cruise ship stop in July and could not have asked for a better experience. We had limited time in port and he made every second count - great communication from the start and was flexible in tailoring the trip to exactly what we wanted. We caught 30+ salmon (had to release the Kings) in calm glassy waters. He even moved spots a couple of times to keep the ride smooth. He was incredibly patient with the kids and kept them engaged the entire time (made a "bucket aquarium" with starfish, jellyfish and kelp, let them drive the boat, we fed eagles, he made a bull kelp doll, etc). You won't be disappointed.

  • Nick was awesome! A third generation Alaskan, Nick was born and raised in Ketchikan, worked for 20+ years as a commercial fisherman, and clearly knew the best ways to salmon fish. He was an expert fisherman and guide. It was clear he cared, even on our slow day he was non stop changing lures, adjusting the lines, and finding the best places to move the boat…which we did not necessarily see from other fisherman in the area. With snacks, drinks, and a bathroom we were very comfortable on Nick’s very clean boat. 1000% recommend Nick and hope everyone can go fishing with him!

  • Nick was an amazing host from the first time I called him a few months before our trip. He helped me learn more about Ketchikan and helped us get the most from our trip there. The fish weren’t super cooperative for anyone on the water on our fishing day, but Nick was patient and helped us get a good haul. He and the other boats were in contact with each other the whole time, helping each other find the best spots. He made the whole trip special for my teenaged Florida fisherman. Thanks for a memorable trip!

    Drew H.

  • Nick,

Thanks for your hard work getting us on the salmon. Appreciate everything.

  • Thanks again for the awesome vacation on July 11th. I wanted to let you know that Ty won snapshot of the week here in Utah as a result of the big salmon he caught. I am going to send you a few videos. We thank you and grateful for a dream come true. Chasin’ Tail Charters is the best!

  • Nick – we all had a great time last week. You obviously know your stuff and made the day far more than a fishing trip. Everything was just fantastic and all thought it was the highlight of our trip. You live in a beautiful part of the world and I expect we’ll be back at some point to explore it further.

    Thomas Eichenberger

  • My husband, son, son-in-law, and 3 grandchildren (20-19-12) spent the day salmon fishing with you. We are home in Iowa now with 50 pounds of frozen salmon! You should hear the dinner time tales about our day of sportfishing with Chasin’ Tail Charters, what a great experience!

    Jane McMurray

  • We’re settled back in our routine back here in Texas. 97 degrees, Yuk!  One of our fondest memories of our vacation is the day you took us fishing! We enjoyed talking with you and appreciate all the knowledge you shared.  Our fish arrived yesterday and of course it was on the menu for dinner. Delicious!

    Tom & Debra Amundsen

  • Hey Thanks again, Nick!  We appreciate your professionalism towards your craft, and the attention to detail on your boat was second to none!  We can tell you are respected in the industry, and we are excited to schedule our charter with you next year.

    Kit & TC

  • Nick, thanks so much for giving us a special memory and experience in Alaska – your personal touch and information almost made us experts like yourself. I think my photos speak for themselves – they made me famous on the cruise ship because nobody else was able to capture pictures like mine.

    Ingrid & Tom Forbes

  • James Brown was called the hardest working man in show business. Well Capt. Nick is the hardest working man in Ketchikan. He is constantly on the move so he can provide his guest with an outstanding fishing experience, AND he DELIVERS IT.

  • Captain Nick took six of us out on his well appointed boat for a great day of fishing. He had a game plan based on tides and location and it worked out very well, we caught 38. We missed nearly as many…We would recommend this trip to any fishing / outdoor enthusiasts looking to do something special in Ketchikan.

  • Captain Nick, thank you for such a great experience catching King salmon. This was on my "bucket list". You were such a professional and made the trip worth every penny. Hope you have a wonderful season and hope you and your family all the success and happiness. Hope to come back and fish again.

    Dale
